We just got word that tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 8:30 a.m. City Councilmembers Jean Godden and  Mike O’Brien will be at Green Lake to announce their proposal to accelerate the cleanup of the toxic algae in the lake. The algae is part of a series of blooms that have occurred over the past three summers and resulted in temporary lake closures. (No doubt you’ve seen the warnings and signs around the lake!)

As we reported earlier today the cleanup is slated to occur sometime in the next few years but without a definite timeline for completion. The current budget that is set aside for cleanup would involve alum, a method used several years ago that temporarily helped eliminate the algae for several years. Tomorrow’s meeting will aim to explain the problem and recommended cleanup method as well as provide a timeline and proposed long-term cleanup solution.

The council members will be presenting their plan at 8:30 a.m. outside of Green Lake Boat Rentals on the northeast side of the lake (7351 East Green Lake Dr. N).
