Nutty Squirrel Gelato recently invited us to preview their new menu.

You may know Nutty Squirrel for their expansive gelato menu. But starting today that menu includes a full line of traditional European bakery items. This expansion makes Nutty Squirrel Gelato the closest European pasticceria (the Italian version of a French patisserie) to Green Lake. In addition to their vault of more than 350 family recipes, they now serve items such as lava cake, panna cotta, croissants, macarons, chocolate mousse and more.

The launch of the new menu was designed to capture the attention of adults who, the owners say, aren’t often looking for gelato or frozen desserts during the winter. Kids, however are a different story, and could eat gelato year round – perhaps there’s something to be learned there!

Because I tend to fall in to the camp of gelato being a year-round treat, I asked a bit more about Nutty Squirrel’s gelato making. I found out that their gelato is the real deal. Made from scratch using milk from freshly milked cows. The 5% milk fat lends to the creamiest gelato. And the flavors are always rotating for seasonality.

And the gelato has won International acclaim. In 2016, Nutty Squirrel’s Gelato master Tolga Seymen was a 2016 finalist in the international competition, Gelato World Tour.

We also learned that Tolga holds classes at the Magnolia Nutty Squirrel kitchen for adults and children who want to learn more about artisan gelato making. Classes are offered, by special request, for parties, team building events etc.

Nutty Squirrel Gelato, which has three locations (Phinney Ridge, Magnolia and Maple Valley) is part of the Fainting Goat family with locations in Wallingford and Fremont.

Go for the gelato. Stay for any and all of the bakery items. But a warning, this is dangerously close to Green Lake. If you are on the south end of Green Lake, check out Fainting Goat – it has the same flavors as Nutty Squirrel. Or if you are in the north end of Green Lake maybe walking up the Phinney Ridge hill will make you feel better about all the sweet delights at the store? That’s what I’ll tell myself when I go.
